I purchased a Tesla Model Y RWD, which has the smallest battery, slowest charging and least performance in the Model Y range. But I think this is the best buy and in this video I go through why the RWD is probably the one to choose. In the UK, the long rage model costs £8,000 more and the only differences are in the powertrain. Most new buyers focus on range and there the differences aren't as much as you'd first think due to the different charging profiles on the battery packs. The RWD has a LFP battery that needs to be charged to 100% at least once a week. The AWD LR model should only be charged to 80-90% unless you're about to embark on a long journey. The RWD car at 100% SoC will do the same range as the LR car at 85% SoC. So if you charge at home, for the majority of the time there's no difference in range between the two models.
I hope this video helps new Tesla buyers.
Tesla specs can change, so do check. This car was new in December 2023 and this video was filmed in February 2024 and currently the specs have remained unchanged.

This is a Motormouth couple car review of the Tesla Model Y electric SUV. Tesla continues to dominate the electric car market! The Model Y is now the most popular electric vehicle in the US and its popularity continues to grow around the world. Let us know if you have any questions for us, leave them below, we’ll pick some of them to answer in our review. There are two Model Y models, the Long Range with 384 horsepower and 531 km/318 miles of EV range. It goes 0-100 km/h in 5 seconds/0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds. It comes with standard 19” wheels, optional 20” wheels, which our test model has and up to 7-passenger seating. The second option is the Performance model with 450 horsepower and 488 km/303 miles of EV range. It goes 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds/0-60 mph 3.5 seconds. It comes standard with 21” wheels with up to 5-passenger seating. This model has performance brakes, a lowered suspension and aluminum alloy pedals. With standard AWD, the Model Y has two independent electric motors that control torque to the front and rear wheels for better handling, traction and stability control. Tesla clearly has the charging infrastructure in place with 3,000+ Supercharger stations and 30,000+ Superchargers around the world with 6 new locations opening up every week. Tesla says you can recharge up to 261 km in 15 minutes at Supercharger locations. The Model Y can tow 3500 pounds and Tesla offers a warranty of 4 years or 80,000 km/50,000 miles. The battery and drive unit is 8 years or 192,000 km/120,000 miles. This Tesla provides a lot of versatility whether you go with the 5 or 7-seater model. The interior is clean, simple and clutter-free with a beautiful glass roof that creates an open cabin. You’ll notice there is no head-up display or gauge cluster keeping with the minimalistic design.
The technology is amazing, the touchscreen controls everything, there are no buttons or knobs to play with, but the good news is it’s intuitive to use. Not only is it fast but responsive and the graphics are clear. It comes with two wireless chargers that are quick, the fastest I’ve used in a vehicle. To initiate a voice command in the Model Y, hit the button to the right of the steering wheel to open the glove box, the tailgate, heat your seats or steering wheel. There’s also Netflix and Youtube if you want to watch shows/Motormouth reviews while your vehicle is charging. The front seats are comfortable and supportive and the elevated seating position and low dash gives the driver a great view of the road ahead. The second row is spacious with a flat floor and each second row seat folds flat independently creating great storage space if you need to move larger items or even carry skis. We managed to fit a car seat in the middle seat without an issue. The 3rd row is tiny and best used in a pinch for small children. The Tesla Model Y has a small front trunk and a larger rear cargo area. There’s also additional storage underneath the cargo floor, my carry-on suitcase fit perfectly and gave me more room to store other items. Space management in the Model Y is excellent.

There are two switches that are identical. One for the passengers up front and also one in the rear. We don’t even have to completely open it as you can push the button again and it will stop at your desired spot. The motor noise is super quiet when in operation and the premium fabric has 5 layers to block out the UV rays. Installation took me about 35 minutes but if you have a friend to help you install this, I’m sure it will take only 15 minutes.
Now because this item is not collapsable the shipping box is going to be quite large. Once you get it out of the box this is what it looks like along with the included tools you’ll need. There’s only one cable that connects in the rear of the model y. It’s super easy to locate and you will not have to tear up the entire back of your car to find the plug. There are two brackets that will go in the front of the sunroof along with a couple screws to affix the brackets. They also provide a screwdriver should you need one. Before placing this in your tesla be sure to apply this felt tape over the front of this bracket. I’m not sure why they could not just affix this ahead of time but it so we do not see this silver bar on top. Once you have this on, puncture the two screw holes on both sides so we can easily tighten these screws later on. Place this through the back of the car with the motor side at the end of the tesla. Next take the included cord that came with the kit and pull back just a little bit of the rubber seal so we can grab the cord we need to bypass this plug. Connect the cords to the appropriate plug and then place this back behind the fabric wall. Continue to run the cod up the side placing it behind the plastic wall and replace the rubber seal back to its original place. Use your included pry tool to ensure the rubber seal is over the plastic. I went ahead and just randomly placed the brackets in the front between the glass and the liner as I will adjust them later to fit the sunshade.
Now if you are on your own like me, you may want to find something to hold half of this up to help you run the cord between the back liner. I just used my work stool and a box while the front part is held up by the headrests. Next I just used the included electrical tape to wrap it around the end of the connection with a long zip tie to feed it through the back head liner. On the back side you will be able to pull down the fabric panel and look for that wire and feed it through. Finally connect the two cords as you will hear it click into place. Neatly tuck in the rest of the wire behind the rubber seal and panels. Use your pry tool to place back the rubber seal over the top of the fabric. Before I installed this to the sunroof I wanted to make sure it worked by pressing on the open button and sure enough it works just great.
The back portion of the sunshade slides over the top of the back headliner with the already built in clips. Just slide it into place as this should fit perfectly to the shape of the back ceiling.
We are in the final stretch here as we just have to screw in the front panel to those brackets we placed earlier. Just line up the hole with the bracket and use the included magnetic screwdriver to affix this into place.
And that’s it for the install, as we can see the back button works by simply pushing on the forward button and letting the shade auto close. We can also tap the same button again and it will stop in your desired spot. Pushing the button again will close it all the way. I have to say, I’ve installed quite a few different types of sunshades and this one by far has been the best one. It is so easy now to simply open and close the shade when you want to. It looks and feels like and OEM sunshade and I wish tesla would offer this on all the Model Ys. What do you guys think? We took delivery of our Tesla Model Y back in May of 2021. This was our second Model Y as we had originally taken delivery of one of the first 3k Model Y's built back in 2020. When the 7 passenger option started delivering, that is when we switched to the Model Y we have today.

Along with a fresh interior update, the Model Y came with a larger battery. This was of course on top of adding the 7 seat option, which we would use from time to time with multiple adults and our 2 children in the car. This combined with the impressive storage space in the Model Y makes it one of the best cars to consider. Don't just take my word for it, the Model Y was the best selling car of any fuel several times this year, throughout the entire world.

We have surpassed 50k miles on our Tesla Model Y and there is a lot to talk about. In this video I will review the costs, wear and tear, battery degradation, autopilot, FSD, overall pros and cons and wrap it up with final thoughts following this 50k miles.

The hard thing to explain to people is just how much cheaper it is to operate an electric car. Because EV's usually come with a higher price tag than their gas equivalent, it takes a shift in thinking for the average consumer to understand. When factoring in the maintenance and fuel costs, an electric car can save substantial money.

In this last 50k miles, degradation of the battery has been as much on my mind as it is many. That said, the battery has seemed to really settle in at the 10% mark. When I took delivery, the BMS read 79 kWh nominal. At this time, that is now reading 71 kWh nominal. This 10% reduction seems to be pretty good considering that over half of the lifetime charging on this car was on a supercharger.

Autopilot and FSD continue to make progress. The good news is that in this last year, FSD and Autopilot have improved at a much faster rate than the previous year. Phantom braking does still happen, but it is much more rare these days compared to a nearly daily occurrence last year. FSD, while not ready for wide release in my area, has made pretty significant improvements over the last year also.

Overall, this car hits a lot of the marks. It executes in ways that other EV's are not able to. The Model Y is the best balance of price, range, space, performance and comfort. Add on top of that the qualification for the $7,500 EV Tax Credit, this Tesla Model Y is going to be hard to beat. If your budget is somewhere close to the average new car price in America, there is no other car you should be looking at as the Model Y is the BEST all around EV on the road today.
